Summer 2020 FFT

Once in a while I will be sharing my Five Favorite Things (FFT) of the moment. Here are 5 of my favorite things of this summer so far.

Podcast: Love To Sew

I love listening to this podcast while tracing my pattern pieces and cutting out fabric. It’s like having sewing friends in the room while I sew. My favorite episodes are the ones where the two hosts Helen and Caroline just chat about how their lives are going, discuss the different types of zippers or another technical aspect of sewing, and answer listener questions. I’ve learned about many small independent pattern companies and sewing bloggers through their podcast.

TV: The Repair Shop (on Netflix)

I watched all of this show while knitting. The premise is that someone comes in with a busted family heirloom and The Repair Shop experts lovingly piece the antique back together. Each episode ends with a big reveal and happy reunion between owner and heirloom. The program showcases different craftsmen with skills as diverse as silver chasing and pinball machine repair. My favorite episodes involve stuffed animal repairs.

Book that I read recently: Trick Mirror: Reflections on Self-Delusion

I really enjoyed the mix of personal stories and cultural criticism in this collection of essays. Also remember barre classes? So long and thanks for all the tucks.

Tool: Giant sticky notes

These giant orange sticky notes are helping to remind me of life on the other side of quarantine. Good for little and big notes!

Dance: New York City Ballet Digital Season

Last year was my first time subscribing to the New York City Ballet. I looked forward to going to the ballet about once a month on Tuesday nights. After all of the performances were canceled in the spring, NYCB released some past performance footage online. The videos are no longer available but here are some videos that are narrated by the dancers, describing the movement and feeling of the pieces.

My favorite ballets are the abstract ones that don’t have a story. I love watching the formations and gestures and letting my mind wander. Agon is one of my favorite ballets and I’m really looking forward to seeing this again and other performances when live events return!
